march 5 _ hold the door

Is it just me, or does it seem like strangers rarely hold the door open for each other these days?

Now I know I’m only 24, so when I say “these days” the day’s previous that I am referring to are the days I shared growing up in my midwestern hometown, Ste. Genevieve, MO.

Maybe it is part of that small town charm, but I grew up holding doors open for people and people holding them open for me. It was definitely expected for men to hold the door open for women, but most people would do it regardless of any presumed gender.

For me it’s a really simple way to acknowlege others around me, and spread a little kindness. It’s also great, because it’s pretty much a nonverbal interaction, besides maybe a “thanks” and a “no problem.” I don’t mind talking to strangers, but when you’re holding the door open for someone they are always on their way somewhere—not much time to chat.

Overall I think I’m reflecting on this today, because most times when I pause to hold the door for someone, their face really lights up. I would love for us to be able to do that for each other more—building little connections, human to human.

Go light up some faces.

Keep peace and keep creating,

Parker <3
