january 20 _ we are cities on mountains

I haven't been reading much of the bible lately. I studied Theology in college, so it was always close by, but since graduating, I haven't opened it too much. Recently I attended a prayer service where they read a passage, and although it is fairly familiar, this verse really struck me:

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden." - Matthew 5:14

We are cities set on mountains. There is such a confidence in this image. It really builds a sense of equality and respect between persons. Each and every one of us built on MOUNTAINS, meant to be seen, meant to be lights. Imagine the beauty in this if we could all recognize it.

And the fun in it! Making a new friend is like exploring a new city. Or sharing time with loved ones is like sharing time in cities that you already are familiar with and enjoy. It has me thinking about how different each of our cities would look and function! They would each be so eccentric and interesting...

Each with our own designs, grids, and structures. Each with unique styles of architecture, and various city districts. Maybe with a great public transit system. Maybe with a lot of city parks. Maybe with any kind of restaurant there is to dream of. Does it run on renewable energy? Does it have a lot of skyscrapers or brick buildings? Does it have a diverse culture or a specific cultural background? Is it known for hosting annual events or celebrations? Is it a financial hub, a religious base, or creative epicenter? Is it bustling and populated, or slow moving and quiet? There could be lots of curvy roads. There could be more apartment buildings or more single family homes. There could be sports teams. There could not be sports teams. The possibilities are endless. What does your city look like?

What would it be like to recognize everyone around you and yourself as cities shining on mountains? Keep peace and keep creating,
